As stated in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs.” This is the truest statement of what love is. As perfectly imperfect beings, we find ourselves searching for this kind of love, but just as we are imperfect, so is our love.
So what is…an imperfect kind of LOVE. If we are fortunate enough to know a couple who has stood the test of time and still stands together, then we have at the very least seen the example of it.
So many people fall in and out of love, but that word has been used so loosely over time that do we really even know what it is? The short answer is no, but if you have ever truly loved another person then you understand these truths.
Love is constant. It is ever flowing. Like a river. It is given and received everyday with every breath. This doesn’t mean that its always happy and easy. In fact, it is when it is hard and sad that we see the truest form of love.
A love so deep rooted within the person that they not only won’t let go, but they can’t. This love lives in the fabric of the person and is as necessary to their existence as the air they breathe. Therefore, when times are the hardest and the world seems to be falling apart, you hold on tighter because it is imperative to your survival.
Loving someone through their journey in life means that you love them every step of the way. Some of their steps will be completely infuriating to you, others will be hard to handle, yet you will love them because life without them is even more unbearable.
When we see a couple who has committed their love to each other for decades, understand that the couple has had to endure not just one journey but two. They have had to find it in their heart to accept all the good and bad that comes with the other person and still be committed to their love. They have walked thousands of miles together, climbing mountains, falling along the way, they have endured storms and sunshine, but they continued on, together.
Love is holding on. Love is holding on no matter what because you can’t see a life without this other person’s journey attached.
Love is respect, loyalty and faith. Love is having faith that the other persons love is as real and strong as yours that it will last.
Love is unconditional. It is so unconditional that even when you can’t stand being in the presence of the other person, you don’t let go because LOVE won’t allow it.
Love is a safe place. A place where when the world is too heavy and you just can’t take one more step, your person carries you until you can stand once again.
The love we experience in this world isn’t perfect, but if you are lucky enough to find someone to love you through the test of time. Never let them go because a life with love will always feel like home.
